BOUNTIFUL — To make “Cinderella” shine onstage, you’ve got to do a lot more than wave a wand around.

Luckily, Bountiful High’s Theatre Arts Department is more than ready to take on the task. The group will be bringing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” to the stage Jan. 7, 10, 12, and 14 at 7 p.m., and Jan. 8 and 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“We wanted to do a really fun, really cute show,” said director Angela Brown. “We wanted to do a musical that was family-friendly, and no one on the south end of Davis County has done Cinderella in a long time.”

For those who only know the Disney version of the classic fairy tale, the Rodgers and Hammerstein version gets rid of the talking mice and makes the prince seem a little more like a real person.

The show was originally written for television with Julie Andrews in the starring role, and has had two other major television versions made (starring Lesley Ann Warren and later Brandi in the title role). The version Bountiful High will be using combines elements of all three productions.

“We use the best components of the three television shows,” said Brown.

For the cast, putting on a new musical so soon after “Crazy for You” was a challenge. The double-cast show involves 56 cast members, and all of them began rehearsing for “Cinderella” as soon as “Crazy For You” ended on Nov. 15. During that same time, new costumes had to be made or acquired and sets had to be constructed.

“It’s been a pretty big challenge, but we have such a great group of kids this year,” said Brown. “They’ve been really dedicated and willing to work hard.”

Advance tickets for the show, as well as for the “Prince and Princess Party” being put on by the cast, are available at Top Hat Video and DVD in Bountiful, the Bountiful High business office, or Paisley Skye in Woods Cross. Advance and all matinee tickets are $5.

Tickets will also be available at the door, though they’ll be $8 for evening performances.

“It’s a lovely production,” said Brown. “Definitely non-boring.”
